Stop #182; East Austin Studio Tour 2016

11/14/2016

Things said at Stop #182- the 2nd day.

“I love your use of color.
Wow, these are so lovely and colorful.
I see so many different things in your paintings.
This one reminds me of the blue paintings by Yves Klein.
This reminds me of ‘Waterlilies” by Monet.
This makes me think of Georgia O’Keefe.
I’m looking for 182!
I saw this painting in the catalog and had to see your work in person.
I don’t remember seeing your stuff last year. It must mean you’ve really grown as an artist.”

Is it summer yet?

Lots of life stuff going on. I just finished this latest- been in the works for some months now and finally felt like I shouldn't add anything else. This is the 2nd in my Bokeh series. I went with a bigger size canvas and felt like it gave me a little more freedom. Of course it meant I needed more space and paint! Much harder to sit at the dining table with this bad boy! But our winter was short and warm so I had plenty of chances to take him outside and push some paint around. I loved so many parts of it- it's hard to get the colors just right through the lens, but it's another bright one.

I love that purple stripey with the cyan and green gold hugging it!

The dark parts are much deeper than in the pics.

I love how the painting came together as a whole, but also how certain colors just vibrate next to each other.

Complete

It's always satisfying to say "Yes! It's done!" I have to laugh at these 2 little guys as they are so small yet I feel like I stared at them for months (I did).

Picture
Morning Light, 4"x4", acrylic on aquaboard panel. $20.

I hadn't painted on aquaboard before so the surface is quite different from canvas or canvas panel. These are more like painted sketches to me. The horizon painting also includes iridescent ink which doesn't quite come across in the photo. I settled on the title Morning Light but think it could also be the sunset at dusk over a deep blue lake. Vigil reminded me of a crowd gathering...and the yellow above them were the candles held in reflection.

Vigil, 4"x4", acrylic on aquaboard panel. SOLD.

I love this last panel! Sooooo many colors! It went through several variations where I kept trying to make one or two colors more dominant but I ended up letting each pop where it needed to. And then as happens a lot with me...I started seeing plants and flower shapes.

Also, if you are in the (north) Austin area, you can visit my piece "Cold Sleep" at The Big Show juried by Round Rock Arts. Click on link for address and hours. Doesn't she look pretty? ;0) She'll be hanging there until 8/28.

Thank you for visiting and feel free to comment!

The Merry Month of May

Raising Artist Exhibition at AIA during the WEST Austin Studio Tour.
That red dot underneath the painting means it sold!!! I got to meet the buyer and discuss my motivation. It was all very surreal.

I also finished another panel piece. Just last night. I'm not sure which way I like it best...I'm going with pink on the bottom for now, although seeing it flipped on screen I kind of like the pink on top. Thoughts?

A few close-ups and details...
I've seen a few artists using pastels to add detail and texture so I thought I'd try it out with this one. I love how it made some of the colors really pop. I had a whole collection of Conte and Nupastels from art school I had forgotten about. I'm still working on a name and suggestions are always welcome. This lovely is ready for a new home!

Just keeping a record...

I was here. And so was my painting Sweet Willow.

I also hung most of my recent paintings in a one night show. No sales but a learning experience. Nothing like being set up next to a wall of erotic art. Thankfully, I had decided to leave the kiddos at home.
Picture
And coming up this Friday...I'll have one piece in the WEST Raising Artists Exhibition. Opening night 5/8 and showing through 5/16.  This is very exciting. I really admire this organization and hope to do more with them in the future. Also, I hadn't planned on doing WEST (the spring version of EAST) but I can still say I was a participant!
Picture
I was also lucky enough through generousart.org to be working with an Artist mentor. I've been so excited about this!!! We've only met once but it was an amazing experience and I can't wait to blog more about what I've learned from a successful artist. Ok...off to bed. Tomorrow is a new day to make art.
